The Roxbury, Connecticut home of late Broadway icon Stephen Sondheim is now on the market, asking $3,250,000. The celebrated composer and lyricist’s retreat is for sale for the first time in nearly 40 years. Situated on nine secluded country acres, the historic 1792 property features a three-bedroom main house, a pool, a one-bedroom pool house, and a detached garage. Within, the home boasts a 21st-century renovation, with more than a passing nod to its former owner’s remarkable creativity.

In the beautifully renovated main house, rooms have plenty of space to ponder and create. A dramatic living room is framed by a soaring cathedral ceiling, historic wide-plank wood flooring, and tall windows overlooking the verdant grounds. The room is anchored by a rough-hewn stone fireplace.

A lively country kitchen has warm stone tile flooring, rich wood countertops, top-notch appliances, and plenty of wine storage. The decor in the formal dining room references the home’s history.

Framed by walls of windows and a slate floor, the home’s sunroom is the perfect place to spend an afternoon.

After dinner, head for the classically appointed entertainment and music room, perfect for piano recitals, a game of pool–or conversion to an additional bedroom.

Also on the main level, the primary suite gets a sprawling full bath underscored by tile and stone. Beyond the walk-in shower, it’s the first bathroom we’ve seen with built-in library shelving.

Upstairs are two more ensuite bedrooms, each with a private sitting room. A paneled library is here, too, of course.

The grounds showcase the Connecticut countryside, with amenities that add up to a perfect contemporary retreat. A hot tub and a pool complement a one-bedroom pool house with a rustic stone porch and a stone fire pit; a two-car garage adds convenience.

Sondheim’s Turtle Bay townhouse hit the market for $7 million in July. He bought the home in 1960 and lived there until his death in 2021 at 91.

Former tabloid talk show host Sally Jessy Raphael’s 25.5-acre equestrian estate just hit the market for $6,500,000. Even without the fame connection, this fanciful and fabulous property is worthy of its own TV show. The property consists of a 43-room Elizabethan manor house, two caretaker homes, a carriage house with groom’s quarters, a yoga studio, a 12,000-square-foot stable, a greenhouse, and more. Known as Elmwood Farm, the Pawling, NY, estate is the town’s most expensive listing. The main house, built in 1860 is itself an architectural event, with 17 bedrooms, 10 fireplaces, and endless ornate and whimsical details.

Inside, hand-carved pilasters, hand-painted plaster ceiling motifs and moldings, leaded glass windows, and variegated gables with carved vignette timber fascia and Gothic spires frame a painstakingly updated home. The mansion’s many rooms are surprisingly perfect for modern life.

The intimate living room is anchored by a fireplace and framed by wooden beams and rich restored wooden flooring. Everything is big enough to serve a medieval feast in the well-appointed country kitchen and capacious dining room. A gorgeous sunroom is surrounded by arched steel-framed windows overlooking the verdant grounds.

The home’s many ornate chambers are ready to provide endless entertainment for your guests, friends, and family. The music room features marble-tiled flooring and a massive fireplace. The plaster-framed den is perfect for small gatherings. And who wouldn’t want a private chapel?

Details provide a distraction–and companionship–at every turn: A figured-oak grand staircase is enhanced by 30 newel posts with hand-carved mythical creatures. On the second floor, you’ll find walls adorned with hand-painted storybook murals.

There are currently no fewer than 17 bedrooms here. Each with its own lavish decor, they appear to range from palatial to merely adorable. Bathrooms feature antique fixtures and plenty of charm.

Beyond the main manor house, the grounds hold a wonderland of good things. A barn awaits your trusty steed, as does a sprawling garage. The property promises to be the perfect upstate country retreat for an army of your favorite knights and damsels, where there’s never a shortage of spaces to explore.

Barbara Walters’ longtime Upper East Side apartment, last listed for $17.75 million, has found a buyer, less than a year after the beloved journalist’s passing. Located at 944 Fifth Avenue, the home received a $2 million price cut from its initial asking price of $19.75 million in April. Walters lived in the five-bedroom, five-bathroom pre-war apartment for 30 years until her death last December at the age of 93.

The apartment’s price was lowered to $17.8 million in September, and last week entered contract with an unknown buyer at an unconfirmed price, according to the Olshan Luxury Market Report, as Crain’s reported.

Entrance to the grand abode is through a private elevator landing and a spacious entry gallery. The living room boasts 10-foot ceilings, views of the park, and a wood-burning fireplace. The sprawling main room can easily host large groups of friends, family, and guests.

All of the apartment’s rooms, including its living room, dining room, and wood-paneled library, are connected by large transition areas, making it the ideal space for entertaining guests while also allowing for comfortable day-to-day living.

The home’s wood-paneled primary bedroom suite also has views of Central Park and another wood-burning fireplace. The luxurious suite also includes two baths.

Located down the bedroom hallway are two additional large bedrooms, one of which is currently configured as a den. All of the bedrooms have en-suite baths, and the unit also features two staff rooms, each a bathroom.

Other highlights of the home include an expansive eat-in kitchen with a butler’s pantry and an adjacent laundry room.

The home was listed as Walters left it, which included all of her belongings. On November 6, Bonhams auctioned her jewelry, furniture, clothing, and comprehensive collection of American art. Highlights of the collection included pieces from some of the most prominent artists of the Gilded Age, including John Singer Sargent and Childe Hassam, according to Bonhams.

When Walters moved into the apartment in the late 1980s, she enlisted the help of interior designer Mario Buatta to fill it with fine art, antique furniture, and souvenirs from her international travels. Over time, the apartment saw new additions in the form of gifts from friends, including items from John Lennon and Yoko Ono, according to Curbed.

The apartment’s decor became a reflection of Walters’ trailblazing career in media and a space that frequently hosted 30-person dinners including some of the most famous in politics, fashion, art, and media.

Much of Walters’ household possessions were auctioned off as well. She was known for owning items that reminded her of key moments in her life, like a painting above her bed that depicted a scene of Boston Swan Boats.

Constructed in 1925, 944 Fifth Avenue is a 14-story pet-friendly limestone building with only one apartment per floor. The co-op building offers residents private storage, a gym, and a door attendant.

Booking.com is offering fans of Martha Stewart a unique opportunity to experience a Thanksgiving-inspired stay at her scenic farmhouse in upstate New York, complete with appearances by the “Queen of Thanksgiving” herself. A pair of lucky fans will stay in the Tenant House on the farm in Bedford, located about 90 minutes from Manhattan, tour the property, receive signed copies of Martha’s cookbooks, and even eat brunch with the lifestyle legend/entrepreneur. Booking for the November 18-19 stay, priced at $11.23 in honor of Thanksgiving, opens on November 16 at noon on a first-come first-served basis.

The farm spans more than 150 acres over carefully maintained grounds in Westchester County. The farm is a perfect fall-time retreat and was meticulously and stylishly restored by Stewart. Throughout their stay, guests will enjoy insights from Stewart about hosting during the holidays and how to set the perfect table.

“Thanksgiving has always been one of my favorite holidays to celebrate, which is why I’m excited to be Booking.com’s newest host and welcome guests to my Bedford farm for a Thanksgiving-inspired stay ahead of the big day,” Stewart said.

Steward continued: “Every year, my Thanksgiving holiday prep begins weeks before hosting my family in Bedford, so I can’t wait to welcome the guests that book this experience to my fall-ready Tenant House on the farm and look forward to sharing my favorite Thanksgiving-inspired traditions during their stay.”

Guests will be taken on a guided tour of the grounds by Martha’s head gardener Ryan McCallister, who will show off her famous chicken coop, gardens, and horse stables. There will also be a table setting and wreath-making demo with Kevin Sharkey, executive director of design for Martha Stewart Living, who will share tips and tricks on making a Thanksgiving dinner go above and beyond.

They will also have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to enjoy brunch with Martha Stewart herself, prepared by James Beard Award-winning chef Thomas Joseph.

This rare opportunity with Booking.com is the first time Stewart has opened up her guest house to the public in this kind of way, Stewart told CNN.

The Tenant House sits on the property of Stewart’s primary residence; a 153-acre farm called Cantitoe Corners that she purchased in 2000 for $15.2 million.

Celebrated photographer Annie Leibovitz has listed her home in the Brentmore co-op at 88 Central Park West for $8.6 million. As 6sqft previously reported, Leibovitz purchased the “classic-seven” co-op in 2014 for $11.25 million in a building known for celebrity residents like Robert DeNiro, Paul Simon, and Sting. Leibovitz, whose iconic images feature luminaries from John Lennon and Yoko Ono to Mick Jagger and Demi Moore, thoroughly renovated the Upper West Side co-op, her Manhattan home base in the ensuing years. As the New York Times reports, she also owns a home in the West Village as well as a family home in Rhinebeck, NY.

Listing broker Deborah Kern of the Corcoran Group told the Times the four-bedroom residence is “priced to sell,” as it’s listed at a roughly $2.7 million discount.

“The apartment is now too big for me,” Leibovitz told the Times in an email. “I live and work downtown,” she said, “and our house upstate is now our family home.”

The enviable Upper West Side apartment is wrapped by picture windows offering iconic Central Park views. Pre-war details like high ceilings, polished hardwood floors, and decorative moldings frame the home’s interiors.

The space is introduced by an elegant entrance gallery. A suitably grand formal dining room abuts a 32-by-20-foot living room with space for a grand piano and plenty of seating.

The renovated eat-in kitchen boasts top-of-the-line appliances and custom cabinetry. An adjacent butler’s pantry offers a rare amount of prep and storage space for a Manhattan kitchen. A separate home office is ready for serious work. Also on this floor is a staff room/bedroom with an en-suite bath, and a fully equipped laundry area.

Up a curving stair is the home’s private space. A sprawling primary bedroom gets a windowed bath, a walk-in closet, a second closet, and those fabulous Central Park views.

Also on this level are two more bedrooms with plenty of closet space. A second full bath can be accessed by both bedrooms.

Built in 1910, the Schwartz & Gross-designed full-service building doesn’t skimp on modern amenities: The pet-friendly residence offers an attended lobby with a concierge, doorman services, private storage space, a gym, and an emergency backup generator.

Anthony Rapp, who played the leading role of Mark Cohen in Broadway’s “Rent,” has put his East Village condo on the market for $3.85 million. Located within the luxury boutique building 32 East 1st Street, the actor’s three-bedroom, three-bath home features designer-crafted details across roughly 1,500 square feet. According to the New York Post, Rapp, who also starred in the comedy “Dazed and Confused,” bought the apartment for $3.57 million in October 2021.

Before moving into the home at East 1st Street, Rapp put his longtime loft studio in Noho on the market for $1.95 million in October 2021, as 6sqft reported. The actor purchased the downtown loft two decades ago for $375,000.

The Post reports that Rapp and his husband Ken Ithiphol welcomed their first child last year and are now looking to move to a bigger home to accommodate their growing family.

“We don’t know yet where we’ll end up, but we are very excited by the possibility of a bigger space for our family,” the couple told the newspaper.

The East Village pad boasts an open living room and modern finishes throughout. The sunny corner residence has triple-pane picture windows, high ceilings, and white oak floors.

The chef’s kitchen faces the living and dining room, with the cityscape of East 1st Street and Second Avenue as a backdrop. The sleek space includes Bianco Lasa marble, brushed oak Italian cabinetry, and high-end appliances, including a wine fridge and dishwasher.

The primary bedroom is in its own private corner off of the living space and separate from the two other bedrooms. The main suite has a large walk-in closet and an en-suite bath with stunning stonework from floor to ceiling.

Down the hall are the two remaining bedrooms, one of which is currently set up as an office but has a custom Murphy bed/bookcase perfect for overnight guests.

The home is ready for contemporary living with a built-in Sonos system, radiant bathroom flooring, electric shades, and central air and heating. Amenities at the 10-story building 32 East 1st Street, which was built in 2017, include a 24-hour attended lobby, a shared landscaped courtyard, a fitness center, and a spa.

The neo-Gothic townhouse once owned by late fashion designer Oleg Cassini is for sale. The five-story home at 135 East 19th Street became part of an estate battle between the daughter and widow of Cassini following his death in 2006, ending only last year when it was sold in an auction for just $5 million. Now on the market for $13,950,000, the quirky townhouse measures nearly 7,000 square feet and features a double-height living room with a barrel-vaulted ceiling and massive stone fireplace, stained glass windows on every floor, a glass solarium, and more unique elements.

Photo courtesy of Russ Ross Photography, Inc.

In 1910, British-born architect Frederick Sterner was hired by Joseph B. Thomas to reimagine the existing townhouse at 135 East 19th Street; he transformed the 19th-century Victorian building into a “Gothic fantasy,” according to the Daytonian in Manhattan. The townhouse, known as the “Joseph B. Thomas House,” has a stone base with a street-level entrance and four stories of brick above it. Sterner’s alteration, which included a gut renovation of the interior, later led several homes on the block to undergo similar remodels.

Cassini, best known as the designer for Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis during her time as First Lady, lived in the home until his death in 2006. The dispute between Cassini’s widow, Marianne Nestor, and his daughter Christina went on for over a decade. As the Real Deal reported, the property was foreclosed upon and auctioned at the New York County courthouse, selling to the only bidder for $5 million in October 2022. Bloomberg was the first to report the listing.

Through the wood-carved entry doors, you’ll enter the foyer, with its Flemish patterned stone floor. On this level is the stunning living room, which the architect called the “Italian Room.” Take in the soaring barrel-vaulted ceiling with plasterwork, the carved wood wall paneling, the 7-foot-tall stone fireplace, and the elaborate wall of stained glass windows.

The wall of stained glass opens into a charming indoor garden under a glass solarium. This space has a working fountain and areas for plantings.

The dining room hovers above the living room on a mezzanine level. There’s also a prep kitchen off this room, ideal for formal dinner parties.

The primary suite takes up the entire second floor and features a wood-burning fireplace, two walk-in closets, and a dressing room. This floor, along with the remaining upstairs bedroom floors, can be “reimagined as massive en-suite bedrooms, dressing rooms, staff rooms, and more,” according to the listing. A full kitchen and a laundry room are currently on the top floor.

In total, the home has six bedrooms and five-and-a-half baths.

Below everything is a wine cellar and tasting room in the basement.

The stretch of East 19th Street between Irving Place and Third Avenue became known as the first “block beautiful,” a term used in an American Homes and Gardens article to describe the restoration of aging neighborhoods. Much of the block’s unique charm created by Sterner is still on display today, with 135 East 19th Street among the most intact.

The Puerto Rican musician has moved into a penthouse at the Jardim, a pair of buildings at 527 West 27th Street designed by Brazilian architect Isay Weinfeld. The apartment was last asking $150,000 per month, as the New York Post first reported. The four-bedroom, four-and-a-half-bath apartment offers a perfect indoor-outdoor lifestyle, with sliding glass curtain wall windows leading to nearly 4,600 square feet of private outdoor space across four terraces.

The apartment’s private elevator opens directly into the sun-drenched gallery, living space, library, and a huge south-facing terrace surrounded partially by glass walls. An additional corner terrace is found between the dining and living rooms. According to the listing, a spiral staircase in the library leads to the rooftop.

An eat-in kitchen has custom Molteni cabinets and satin-finish Molteni stainless steel countertops, with fully integrated appliances from Gaggenau. A breakfast nook and an attached outdoor terrace offer casual dining options.

The palatial primary suite also faces south and boasts a private terrace with picturesque views. Perks include walk-in closets and an en-suite bath equipped with custom everything, as well as a separate bathroom and an open-air wet room with a rain shower and freestanding soaking tub.

A full-floor rooftop terrace is the crown jewel of the penthouse, with an outdoor kitchen, lounge areas, lush planting, and a 32-foot lap pool. The apartment is available for purchase, asking $18,500,000. Ryan Serhant and Chase Landow of SERHANT. have the listing.

According to the Post, the apartment will also be featured in Ryan Serhant’s new Netflix show “House of Serhant,” which could debut next year.

With its private driveway and tunnel that links West 27th and West 28th Streets, the 11-story development, Weinfeld’s first New York City commission, is perfect for residents seeking extra privacy and security. Other amenities include a 9,000-square-foot club that has a sky-lit lap pool, fitness center, studios, and spa rooms. The building’s inner courtyard features multi-level gardens and wood and stone pathways.

Bad Bunny, aka Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, has been spotted in New York City recently, attending the Luis Miguel concert at Madison Square Garden on Sunday and at Carbone, according to the Post.

Ivana Trump’s five-story limestone townhouse on the Upper East Side just got a big price cut after being on the market for nearly a year. The estate of the late businesswoman, who was found dead in the home last July, listed the property at 10 East 64th Street last November for $26,500,000. Last week, as CityRealty notes, the Lenox Hill home listed for $22,500,000, a price cut of $4 million. Ivana purchased the townhouse in the early 1990s for around $2,500,000 following her divorce from Donald Trump, as 6sqft previously reported.

Over her 30+ year residency, Trump transformed the 17-room, 20-foot-wide home into a “real-estate personification of her maximalist self,” according to the New York Post. Throughout the home, described in the listing as “Versailles-inspired,” are plenty of over-the-top features, including gold accents and fixtures, animal print, and huge chandeliers.

The five-bedroom townhouse spans 8,700 square feet across six levels, including a cellar. The entrance is through double doors that lead into a grand entry gallery with an Italian crystal chandelier and upholstered walls. A curved marble-carpeted staircase connects to the home’s upper floors, while those who can’t or don’t want to walk can use a gated elevator, which accesses every floor.

“My mom absolutely loved that house,” Eric Trump told the Wall Street Journal last year. According to the WSJ, the proceeds of the home’s sale will go to Eric, Donald Trump Jr., and Ivanka Trump.

Situated on the home’s second floor overlooking East 64th Street, the main living room boasts a soaring ceiling decorated with gold fabric and ornate moldings. The room also features a gold-embossed marble fireplace and four chandeliers.

The dining room is surrounded by gold walls. There are two seating areas within the space, one of which is set up next to floor-to-ceiling windows that look out onto a courtyard.

On the third floor, guests can find a library decorated from floor to ceiling with leopard print and more gold accents. A doll on one of the room’s sofas is said to have been modeled after Ivanka herself, according to the WSJ.

Also located on the third level is the primary suite, which has a softer aesthetic compared to the rest of the home. Styled with lots of light pinks and greens, the room features a mural and private access to a terrace through French doors. The bathroom is decked out in pink Onyx marble, mirrors, and touches of gold, with an ensuite bath with a double sink, a soaking tub, and a separate water closet.

The fourth floor includes three more bedrooms, with an additional guest room with an ensuite bath located on the top floor.

Other features include a media room, a garden, a basement with a sauna, a laundry room, and extra storage space.

Constructed in 1879, the townhouse has a columned facade, mansard roof, and gold and black grilled doors. It is located within the Upper East Side Historic District between Fifth and Madison Avenues, with 10 East 64th Street being one of the most lavish mansions on the block.

A Lower East Side intersection is being renamed “Beastie Boys Square” this weekend, with members of the famed hip-hop trio expected to make appearances during the celebration. On Saturday, September 9 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz and Michael “Mike D” Diamond will join Council Member Christopher Marte and fellow New Yorkers for a block party celebrating the co-naming of the corner of Ludlow and Rivington Streets. The now-iconic intersection was featured in the art for the group’s second studio album “Paul’s Boutique.”

The renaming event will feature a live DJ set by Jon Bless, Beastie Boys pop-up shops and activities, live screen printing, and more.

“Beastie Boys Square” will honor the legacy of the three members of the Lower East Side-based group: Michael Diamond, Adam Horovitz, and the late Adam “MCA” Yauch, whose death in 2012 sparked the effort to rename the intersection.

The effort to rename the corner to “Beastie Boys Square” was kickstarted by LeRoy McCarthy, a hip-hop fan who also led the effort to rename Christopher Wallace Way in Brooklyn and the Wu-Tang Clan District on Staten Island, according to Gothamist.

McCarthy submitted a proposal for the intersection’s renaming in 2014 which was ultimately denied after the local community board determined the Beastie Boys did not meet the guidelines for a renaming. The city requires honorees to have 15 years of community involvement or an exceptional accomplishment worth highlighting. After his request was denied, the City Council prohibited him from bringing the proposal back to them for another five years.

Last year, McCarthy’s most recent proposal was approved by the City Council with support from Marte. Marte has been an outspoken advocate for the intersection’s renaming for nearly 10 years since McCarthy first made his proposal.

“As many of us know, once the Beastie Boys hit the scene, it really changed the hip-hop game. I see it as a celebration,” Marte said in a statement last year following the council’s approval.

“A celebration for the Lower East Side, a celebration for hip-hop, and especially a celebration for our community who has been organizing for a really long time to make this happen.”
