Artist Jasper Johns’ modern rustic former home and studio in the Hudson Valley lists for $600K

American artist Jasper Johns’ former home among the treetops and winding wooded paths of the Hudson Valley is now for sale, asking just $600,000. The Rockland County home at 160 West Main Street, built in the 1930s, includes a spacious art studio, a detached garage, and a separate efficiency guest house, surrounded by stone walls and tall grasses that sheltered one of the most influential artists of our time.
Down a gently pitched driveway, the 93-year-old artist‘s former home is situated on just over an acre of sloping forest. The surrounding woods allow the home a unique privacy; verdant gardens and a rushing brook are a constant natural inspiration.
Walls of windows mean rooms are flooded with light. The studio’s glass garage doors lift up to open the entire space, giving it a treehouse vibe that could inspire any artist.
The original part of the house is a converted barn, a fact that’s highlighted in the hand-hewn beams, barn board walls and wide plank floors of what is now the home’s dining room; Johns later added the studio and a living room. The kitchen has a decidedly mid-century modern charm, from gorgeous handmade floor tiles to beamed ceilings.
Outdoor decks and terraces overlook the woods and brook. Handmade tile floors and a fireplace within and the babble of Cedar Pond Brook in the distance add up to a warm and inspiring home.

According to The Journal News, Johns bought the house in 1973 for $48,000. He later sold the home in 1995.
