I grew up on Houston Street! My parents were original tenants in the brand-new Lillian Wald housing project; I haven’t been down there in many years, but from what I hear, people would be astonished at how nice it was then, with rose gardens and playgrounds and a day-nursery and East River Park right across the drive.

“The Street Book” by Henry Moscow says “the current spelling of the name is a corruption; the street appears as Houstoun in the city’s Common Council minutes for 1808 and on an official map drawn in 1811,”
